Vault 2017: Five Shows We’re Seeing!

It’s that time of year again! Maybe our favourite London festival is back, and looking bigger and better than ever. There are dozens of gems in the programme, but here’s five that have found their way onto our wishlists…

Skin Of The Teeth (pictured)

Written by our associate dramaturg, Anna Beecher, Skin Of The Teeth, is the story of a young man we can’t feel fear, based on the Grimm’s tale, The Boy Who Went Forth To Learn To Shudder. We saw and loved it in Edinburgh. It’s a dark, magical, thriller fairytale with a gripping solo performance from Daniel Holme.

Princess Suffragette

We’re looking forward to this feminist drama about colonialism and defiance. London Grey and Green, a young company dedicated to representing women onstage, tell the story of Princess Sophia Duleep Singh’s journey from pampered daughter of an exiled Maharajah, to becoming the first ever British-Asian suffragette.

Bechdel Theatre Podcast

We’re hoping to get along to this live recording of the Bechdel Theatre Podcast. Beth Watson and Pippa Sa review and recommend plays that pass the famous Bechdel test, and interview prominent women in theatre.

Seven Crazy Bitches

Based on Shakespeare’s ‘Seven Ages of Man’ speech, this show promises an array of cheap weeks and lots of glitter. Taking on gender with the question ‘What’s it like to be a female dog in a dog eat dog man’s world?’, this one definitely has us intrigued.

The Subterranean Season

Over the course of the festival, the fabulous Play Theatre will presenting eight brand new plays created by emerging practitioners, created over just two weeks. Some friends of Smooth Faced Gentlemen are set to be involved and we’ve got a feeling there will be some great work among these!

There look to be loads of other great shows on, and we’d love to hear your recommendations. Let us know in the comments (cliche alert) what else is good or anything you think might be up our street!

(As always, if you have something on you’d like us to see, drop us an email and we’ll try and send one of our team if we can).

Happy Vaulting!
